Happy Thanksgiving from Leon Lynch

Filed under: Wednesday Post — leonlynch @ 4:29 pm

 Hi Everyone

Today I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving from all the Staff of Leon Lynch. Below you will find some safety tips for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

1. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.

2. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you’re cooking.

3. Be alert. You won’t be alert if you are sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs, or consumed alcohol that makes you drowsy.

 4. Keep anything that can catch fire — potholders, wooden utensils, food wrappers, towels or curtains — away from your stove top.

5. Make sure your sleeves are out of the way when cooking. Wear tighter fitting clothing with shorter sleeves.

6. Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

7. Never hold a child while cooking, drinking or carrying hot foods or liquids.

8. Turn the handles of pots and pans on the stove inward to avoid accidents.

9. If you are Deep Frying your Turkey you must be especially careful; always Deep Fry away from porches and other building structures.

10. Test your smoke alarms by pushing the test button. Replace batteries at least once a year.

Have a Safe Thanksgiving

How Funding Works

Filed under: Wednesday Post — leonlynch @ 6:25 am

Hi Everyone

This week I’m posting on Wednesday because of the Holidays. I would like to talk about how the Funding works for Career Development.

I have had questions about why are classes still being scheduled at other Career Development sites and not at Leon Lynch. Let me start with how we get funding based on the Labor Agreement.  Each site is funded by it sponsoring company in our case ArcelorMittal.  The company contributes 15 cents per active employees per hour worked.  On an average around $500.00 per year per employee.  Laid off employees are NOT considered active. As of this writing we have 425 employees laid off. Laid off employees are entitled to their Career Development benefits.  Some of these other sites have not experienced lay offs and have more employees. Sometime this last summer after the start of the lay offs  at the West side employees with more time to take classes the enrollments  increased. Around mid September the Local Joint Committee met to discuss enrollments.  Because of the Lay offs the contributions were dropping and class costs were increasing and it was clear we wouldn’t make it to the end of the year on the way we were going. So we decided to cancel any Customized classes not started or in its first week.  Labor Agreement required Training like MTE and MTM Intro classes was continued along with Tuition Assistance was also continued. Tuition Assistance was explained in an earlier Blog.  The beginning of year we will be  offering some classes that are Tuition Assistance.  Please check the Website www.ihlearningcenter.org .  We plan on scheduling some customised classes this coming spring depending on the contributions and employees returning to work. This last year has been challenging for everyone in one way or another. We will continue to provide the best educational opportunities that is within our financial capabilities.  At this time I want to wish everyone a very Merry and Blessed time with your Family  and Friends this Holiday Season.
